WHAT TO DO WHEN IN MALINDI MAJOR ATTRACTIONS IN MALINDI

Gede Ruins

Gede bears testimony to the life and culture of the people of 13th Century Africa. It provides an insight into the economy, architecture, ways of life, social structure and other aspects of ancient African civilizations. The ruins at Gede were rediscovered in the 1920s and gained the status of Historical Monument in 1927. Since then, about 18ha of the site have been excavated and the remains of several mosques, a palace, residential houses and elaborate pillar tombs have been revealed. They also have a snake park, Kipepeo butterfly house and Swahili museum.

Marafa Hell’s Kitchen

The Depression Marafa, also known as Hell's Kitchen, is a strange throat sandstone. Known locally as Nyari - the place was once a large sandstone ridge consumed by the wind, rain and flooding that formed a series of jagged ravines. The colors in layers of sandstone reveal white, pink, orange and deep crimisi, making the throat especially impressive at sunset when you highlight the tones of ribbed sandstone gorges and reflect the colours of the sun at sunset. The sunset is particularly impressive and you'll want to plan your trip in the afternoon to end the day with a touching moment: it is as if the rocks had caught fire! Enjoy a nature walk in the evening and later, you can watch the baboons and hyenas of the place before you a magical sunset.

The Portuguese Chapel

The little-known Portuguese Chapel, also known as St Francis Xavier Chapel, is located on the seafront about 100 metres from the waterline at Shella area on Mama Ngina Road in Old Town, Malindi. Clocking 517 years now, this thatched-roofed church gets its name because Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama is reputed to have erected it in the 15th century, and two of his crew are supposedly buried here. The chapel, measuring five-by-five metres, has white walls that were made of coral rocks and sand.

Vasco Da Gama Pillar

More impressive for what it represents (the genesis of the Age of Exploration) than the edifice itself. Erected by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama as a navigational aid in 1498, the coral column is topped by a cross made of Lisbon stone, which almost certainly dates from the explorer’s time. There are good views from here down the coast and out over the ocean.

Malindi Museum

Part of the Malindi Historic Circuit, this moderately interesting museum has some displays on underwater archaeology along the Kenyan coast. Upstairs, you can delve into the world of the nine Mijikenda tribes that inhabit the coastal region between Tanzania and Malindi, and learn how they worship, whom they exorcise, and what their daily lives are like.

Malindi Marine National park

The oldest marine park in Kenya covers 213 sq km of powder-blue fish, organ-pipe coral, green sea turtles and beds of Thalassia seagrass. If you’re extremely lucky, you may spot mako and whale sharks. Enjoy glass-bottom boat rides, snorkelling, diving, beach walks, beach swimming, sunbathing and visits to coral gardens.

VISAS

All participants are responsible for ensuring that they have the correct documentation before their departure to Kenya. It is advisable to visit the relevant Kenyan consulate website whether or not you require a visa and if you do how you should make your application.

COVID -19

The facility recognizes the seriousness and the health challenge posed by the covid 19 pandemic and as a result, they have put in place measures that will not just ensure disinfection but a high level of prevention as well. Sandie’s tropical village has created a working partnership with various stakeholders in the management of the pandemic within the county.

For the participants coming into the country, they are required to have a QR code for a complete traveller’s health surveillance form that they can access from the website. https://ears.health.go.ke/airline_registration/ .

After doing a full registration on the website, the code is sent to their e-mail.

Due to the rapidly- evolving situation, check with your airlines, transit countries, and final destination on the most updated travel requirements (such as mandatory COVID-19 tests). Additional information can be found here.(Click HERE)

For those exiting the country who are required to have a PCR test, we have arranged for direct access to a testing facility in Malindi.
